On Breakups

Breakups aren’t like colds. You don’t just take a bunch of pills, drink a few bottles of wine, eat some chicken noodle soup, sleep for a few days, and wake up to find that you’re cured. They haunt you, night and day. You see a little of the person you loved in every face on the sidewalk, but you can’t stay inside and hide, because that means your ex is winning, and we all know that relationships are a game, even when they aren’t. So you cannot afford to lose. And you’re pushing yourself to leave the comfort of your bed and pillows, the comforts of your cats and dogs and hand knit blankets only to be constantly confronted by your feelings. You remember going to that museum with him, or visiting that garden with her. Or taking him to that movie theater. Or wanting to take him to that restaurant.
